WHAT TO WEAR FOR A MODEL UPDATE OR ACTOR HEADSHOT SESSION…

Deciding what to bring to an actor or model update session can feel tricky, so here are a few helpful tips. I’m always happy to offer tailored advice, and you’re welcome to send over outfit ideas in advance for feedback.

I recommend bringing a variety of looks to work through during your session—typically 2 to 4 outfits, depending on the session length. This helps create a diverse set of images.

For actor headshots, it’s useful to think in terms of different “characters” or roles you might play—such as commercial, summery, sporty, classic, street, or even period looks. Including at least one simple, plain outfit is always a great choice.

For model updates, the approach is similar, but I’d suggest keeping things more current and commercial, with a few brighter or bolder elements to add impact.

This list isn’t exhaustive—and it’s definitely not a “go out and buy” guide! You’ll almost certainly already have plenty of clothing at home that will work perfectly for your updates. If you’re unsure, feel free to WhatsApp me some photos and I’ll happily offer suggestions.

A quick note on makeup: I strongly recommend that children do not wear makeup for update or headshot sessions. It’s important they look completely natural—please don’t worry about spots or blemishes, these can be taken care of if needed.

Simple & Classic Look.

This creates images that are simple & timeless, with the focus on the child rather than the fashion. For example, plain jeans or chinos, with white vest etc.  Also works nicely layered with a contrasting jacket / cardigan

Sporty Look.

This may include tracksuits, joggers & hoody, basketball or baseball style jerseys, gilets etc for a commercial / high street sporty look.

Sometimes people also like to bring specific sport outfits to showcase a particular skill/talent.

Denim Look.

Tops, Bottoms or Double Denim! Denim is always in fashion in some way, shape or form.
Some people like to bring a denim outfit as a standalone look, others like to bring denim pieces that fit other looks (eg, a denim sporty bomber jacket, denim dungarees or denim jeans with a plain top).

Smart Casual Look.

Anything from a casual suit, to smart shirt & chinos or floaty dress.
I tend to think ‘Mediterranean summer look’

Oversized / Baggy Look.

Very on trend at the moment – oversized tees / jerseys / trousers etc.
Possibly to include some bold elements for updates.

Textured Look.

Texture in clothes always adds to an image. Think chunky knit tanks/jumpers, cords, ribs, cardigans etc

Something a little bit different …

For model updates especially, it’s always nice to add some brighter / bolder / crazier elements or looks. Big stripes, Dungarees, Whacky prints, Patchwork, Bold Accessories etc.

Hopefully this has given you some inspiration. Don’t forget, you will almost certainly already have clothing at home that will work well for your updates. If you are not sure, or would like more specific advice, please feel free to Whatsapp me some images and I will reply with my suggestions & thoughts.
