It’s easy to get carried away with lighting and think more is better, but sometimes it’s good to strip everything back to basics and see what can be achieved with a single light. Muscle is notoriously challenging to light well. To highlight muscle tone & definition you need specular highlights and dark shadows, at the same time as making the general light flattering and controlling spill into the background and other elements. For this session, I decided to set myself a challenge of using just one light. I used a selection of modifiers including beauty dishes, softboxes, egg crates and bare bulbs. It was fascinating to see how each change to the light (either in modifier or position) impacted on the final image. Here’s a few of my favourites. Can you guess how each image was lit? and which one is your favourite? I’d love to hear your thoughts! (tip, there may be a red herring in there which used more than one light 😉 ).
